Serial killers against cancer cells - IfADo at the DORTBUNT Science Slam
More than a hundred spectators gathered in front of the stage at Reinoldikirche on May 5 for the Dortmund "Masterplan Wissenschaft" science slam. Jens Niemann, PhD student at IfADo, and Prof. Dr. Bernd Schabbing from the ISM (International School of Management) competed against each other and presented their research in an understandable and entertaining way.
Prof. Dr. Bernd Schabbing's slam contribution, entitled "A cruise is fun", brought insights from the travel industry to the point and showed how cruises differ in terms of sustainability and value for money. Jens Niemann slipped into the role of master detective Sherlock Holmes in his talk "How serial killers save lives" and took a close look at tumor cells. Like Holmes, he deals with so-called serial killers in his research, but at the cellular level. Cells of this subgroup of natural killer cells (more on NK cells) kill tumor cells on a large scale. With his vivid comparisons and insights into the day-to-day work of a doctoral student, he impressed the audience with his wit and ingenuity. At the end, the audience voted by applause - which was particularly loud for slammer Jens Niemann, so he was able to hold up the golden boxing gloves as the Science Slam winner at the end.
