Federal Research Minister Karliczek visits Mental Health Research and Treatment Centre

Anja Karliczek, Federal Minister of Education and Research, visited the Research and Treatment Centre for Mental Health at Ruhr-Universität Bochum on 17 August 2021. Here, researchers from different scientific disciplines work together to improve the mental health of children, young people and adults. As part of the network, the Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors in Dortmund (IfADo) contributes its expertise in the field of mental health in the workplace.

In spring 2021, the Research and Treatment Centre for Mental Health (FBZ) was selected as the location of the new German Centre for Mental Health (DZP). Now Anja Karliczek came there to talk directly with researchers and therapists. Mental health is a core issue for society, the minister emphasised – and not just in the Corona pandemic. Nevertheless, people with mental disorders are very often exposed to stigmatisation. „To change this, we need to understand the basics and triggers of mental illness even better.“ This is where the FBZ excels: „As part of the new German Centre for Mental Health, its importance will continue to grow and it will make an important contribution to strengthening mental health in Germany.“

Background: The German Centre for Mental Health

Pooling competencies, improving treatment options and thus strengthening mental health in the long term: With this goal in mind, the Federal Government has initiated the establishment of a German Centre for Mental Health. In a competitive selection process, six locations were chosen in March 2021 – Bochum, Berlin, Munich, Mannheim, Jena and Tübingen. They are developing a joint research concept. The scientific work is to begin in 2023 and will be funded with up to 30 million euros annually.
