I am deeply saddened and shocked to only learn now about Dr. Ehrenstein’s departure.
Ehrenstein had written a chapter on Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz for our edited volume, “Striving for the whole: Creating theoretical syntheses”, which appeared last year in print. Although I never met Dr. Ehrenstein in person, I immensely enjoyed our email exchanges and his valuable help/feedback on my own work. I was wondering for quite some time why I have not heard back from him, and I’m very saddened to now have discovered the reason. He will be truly missed and my sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

I learn only now of this very sad peice of news and felt urged to publicly remember professor Ehrenstein's kindness and sincere helpfulness. He not only gave me some insightful suggestions, but also encouraged me with his interest into my reserach work though at a very early and incomplete phase it may be.
Thank you professor Ehrenstein.

I am deeply saddened by Walter's death. He had a unique personality that brought the best in people; certainly he brought the best in me. I cannot get used to the idea of Walter having died. I still close my eyes and I see him in front of me, smiling with that warm, wise smile.
I am honored to have co-authored, with Walter and Michael Wagner, his last paper while alive [I say this because we have research material and results for more papers]. What a great experience it was, corresponding over the internet under a tight deadline, but always with a sense of humor and, also, revealing a deep knowledge of classic philosophy and literature.
Let me take the liberty to quote Walter from an e-mail he wrote back on August 5 2008, while working on that paper:
"Thomas,
...Good to see you are still striving for the better, the best: ariston. It nicely fits with my own credo that I have adopted form Dag Hammarskjölds MARKINGS who himself took in from a wise man: Meister Eckhart --
'Only the hand that erases can write the true thing' "
Well, Walter, you definitely possessed a hand that could erase and write better, more lasting words to replace the ones that were erased. THANK YOU for enriching our lives. We feel the pain of your family and we hope time will turn their sorrow into sweet memories.
Thank you for being my teacher, Walter
Thomas

I cannot find words to express my deep sadness.
I never forget that he kindly encouraged me in Kyoto when I just started as a new grad student. He will be remembered as a good friend of all Japanese vision scientists. What a loss.

I am deeply saddened.
