New technologies such as mobile devices and mobile internet increasingly enable work tasks to be completed outside of the classic workplace, and beyond regular working hours. The ubiquity of the modern workplace raises
a number of interesting research questions regarding both the causes and consequencesof a trend towards new working arrangements. Researchers from a broad number of disciplines are aiming in particular to achieve better understanding of how ubiquitous working affects, among other things, the labour market, careers, work-life balance, life satisfaction, health, and firm organisation, as well as firm performance. The focus of this conference is therefore interdisciplinary and will bring together researchers from the fields of economics, work psychology, media psychology, occupational medicine, and sociology, who are carrying out research on the following topics:
- Incidence, types and drivers of flexible work arrangements (flexi-time and flexi-space)
- Social and psychological effects of ubiquitous work and mobile work devices
- Labour market effects of flexible work arrangements
- Ubiquitous work and work-family conflicts
- Ubiquitous work and human resource management (skill requirements, monitoring …)
- Productivity effects of flexible work arrangements (creativity, autonomy …)
- Health-related effects of ubiquitous work
- Psychological detachment and recovery from ubiquitous work
A keynote lecture will be given by Ellen Kossek (Purdue University, Krannert School of Management, USA).
