Our recent study referred the use of Progressive Addition Lenses (PAL). When designed for general use these PAL spectacles provide clear vision continuously from distant to near objects (e.g. for car driving and reading printed materials) if presbyopic observers gradually lower the gaze direction of the eyes. We measured the accommodative near point as a function of vertical eye inclination in presbyopic observers assuming comfortable head posture and wearing their habitual PAL spectacles for general use. We found that clear vision was possible with horizontal viewing distances in the range of about 40 – 80 cm and with the screen centre in a range of about 25 – 45 cm below eye level. Such low screen positions were used by 8 of the 12 participants for daily office work: they wore their progression addition lenses for general use and did not need specials glasses for computer work. This is an ergonomic solution for presbyopic users at the computer workplace that may be considered besides different versions of computer vision spectacles. For the choice of the appropriate solution, advantages and disadvantages must be taken into account, considering the individual physiological dispositions and the requirement of the actual task at work.
