The toxicity of many environmental and workplace chemicals is determined by a complicated balance of metabolic "toxication" and "detoxication" processes. These metabolic processes are influenced by individual genetic factors, which are pivotal for the individual disposition. Both exposure to dangerous chemicals and individual disposition factors determine toxic effect outcomes, which may be related to the pathogenesis of chronic disease(s).
